Geography Day celebrated at Mahila Mahavidyalaya.

Gadchiroli Jan. 14 (District Correspondent) Geography Day and poster competition was organized at Mahila Mahaidyalaya here this afternoon. The program was presided over by the Principal Dr. Yogesh Krishnarao Patil.

In his address, Dr. Patil explained that the subject of geography studies both these concepts based on the interrelationship between natural and human factors. Geography plays a crucial role in sustainable development; geographical studies help understand what type of development is suitable for which region. It enables the sustainable management of natural resources such as water resources, soil conservation, and forest resources.

Geography Day is celebrated every year on January 14th, which also coincides with Makar Sankranti. From December 22nd, the sun moves northwards, and the days become longer in the Northern Hemisphere and shorter in the Southern Hemisphere, but truly, the days start becoming longer in the Northern Hemisphere from January 14th. In fact, to commemorate the contributions of the Indian geographer Dr. Chandrashekhar D. Deshpande to the development of geography in schools, universities, and the social sector, the former senior journalist from Mumbai, Dr. Suresh Gharsode, started celebrating Geography Day on January 14, 1988, on Dr. Deshpande’s 75th birthday.

In her introductory remarks, the president of the Geography Study Circle, Najmusba Sayyed, explained the background behind the occurrence of Uttarayan and Dakshinayan.

Dr. Anil Chahande suggested measures to make geography a more comprehensive subject at Gondwana University.  Dr. Kundan Dufare clarified the interrelationship between environment and geography, including water, forests, land, and human life.

Students Haseena Pendam, Vaishnavi Pusam, Maitri Gadswar, and Veena Weskade expressed their views. The program was conducted by Prof. Vivek Yemjelwar, and the vote of thanks was given by Vaishnavi Kapkar.

A poster competition was held on the occasion. In the senior college category, the first prize was given to Najmusba Sayyed and the second to Purva Kawale. In the junior arts category, the first prize went to Vishakha Khadse and the second to Zoya Anjum Sheikh, and in the junior science category, the first prize was given to Anushka Kove and the second to Janhavi Bodalkar.

Dr. Pramod Bodhane, Prof. Pragya Tripathi, Prof. Veena Tumbade, Prof. Gayatri Gurav, Prof. Darshana Khewale, Prof. Megha Bhaskarwar, Prof. Pallavi Mandavkar contributed to making Geography Day a success. Jyotsna Raut, Prof. Kirti Pullakwar, Prof. Sainath Kodjawre, Madhukar Dhanorkar, Lata Wailkar, teachers, non-teaching staff, and students of the geography department provided their cooperation.
