Gadchiroli May 17 (District Correspondent) A social worker and stage artist from Aheri Rahul Pendharkar has launched an innovative statewide online initiative through Adivasi Gramin Sahitya Shikshan Mandal, to save the birds. This campaign is witnessing enthusiastic participation from students across various districts, including Pune, Nagpur, Satara, Akola, Gadchiroli, and Chandrapur and scores of birds are getting water and food.
As summer sets in, the heat becomes scorching and unbearable. Cool water, a fan, or the breeze from an air conditioner offers us relief. But what of those tiny birds living in the trees and around our homes? When sparrows, crows, and pigeons—wandering in search of water and desperate for food—gaze up at the sky, they see nothing but the blazing sun. However, these voiceless birds have now found a lifeline: the helping hands of school children. Considering this problem, this initiative has been started.
Mr. Pendharkar spread the message of saving birds through different social media groups which evoked good response. The primary objective of this initiative is not merely to save birds, but to sow the seeds of a love for nature among young children. Rapid urbanization, excessive mobile phone usage, and a dwindling number of trees are leading to the destruction of bird habitats. “In the summer, birds become parched with thirst.
In such a situation, to encourage children to provide food and water for birds, build nests with their own hands, and learn about nature conservation is our objective, said Mr. Rahul Pendharkar.
Under this initiative, students will place water for birds in earthen pots on their balconies or in their courtyards. They will construct simple nests using cardboard or coconut coir. They will learn the names of the birds in their vicinity and observe their behaviour.
Every student participating in this initiative is being honoured by the organization with a special ‘Certificate of Participation.’
From the tribal regions of Gadchiroli and Chandrapur to the high-tech residential societies of Pune, children everywhere are embracing this initiative. This campaign has successfully instilled a sense of responsibility within the children.
“Every morning, I fill a vessel with water in the balcony; now, sparrows come there,” remarked a participating student.
