Gadchiroli July 18 (District Correspondent) Terming the proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC) as anti-tribals, Krantiveer Narayansingh Uike Vikas Samiti has demanded that the said code should not be applied in the country.

The office bearers of the Samiti met the Resident Dy. Collector and submitted him a memorandum in this regard recently that was addressed to the President of India and raised the issue.

A public notice was issued by the Law Commission of India on 14 June 2023 to implement the Uniform Civil Code in the country as one country- one law motive. This law is personal and applies to marriage, divorce, adoption and property rights, pointed out the memorandum.

This Uniform Civil Code has been opposed by tribal communities across the country. Tribals are not Hindus, so Hindu Code Bill is not applicable to them. Tribals have their own traditional and customary laws.  If Uniform Civil Code is applied to tribals, it will have an adverse effect on the tribal society and the traditional system of the society will be collapsed, it further stated.

Ms. Kusum Alam, Vidarbha General Secretary of the Samiti led the delegation which included Ms. Vatsala Narote, Malti Pudo, Arti Kangali, Sunita Usendi, Shital Salame, Babita Usendi, Jyoti Jumnake, Bharti Gedam, Smita Madavi and others.
