Gadchiroli Feb. 10 (District Correspondent) “Bamboo is a good case to promote socio-economic activity in the areas where it is being cultivated on large scale. Since Gadchiroli is one such area and STRC is already active with bamboo related activities, we should consider hosting further programs on bamboo”, opined Padma Vibhushan Dr. Anil Kakodkar, Chairman of RGSTC, Mumbai.

He was speaking at a one-day workshop cum round table discussion on ‘Bamboo for Green Economy’ organized by STRC at Gondwana University here the other day for the stakeholders.

In consultation with Dr. Prashant Bokare, Vice Chancellor of the Gondwana University, Mr. Girish Sohani, renowned development expert and Principal Advisor, BAIF and Dr. C. D. Mayee, Chairman, Governing Body, STRC, the round table discussion were held.

Dr. Bokare said, through this effort we will strengthen the scope for bamboo-based livelihood by introducing advanced bamboo technology with special focus on bamboo research and innovation.

It was discussed to incorporate bamboo cultivation into existing agricultural systems, identifying bamboo species suitable for diverse climates, evaluating the economic and ecological benefits of different bamboo varieties, methods for large-scale bamboo propagation in this workshop.

Also, the cost-effective techniques to ensure consistent growth, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for harvesting, efficient treatment methods for enhancing durability, standardized production of bamboo components for construction, opportunities for mass production of prefabricated bamboo elements and industry linkage for livelihood enhancement etc were also discussed.

During the workshop, constructive deliberations on various aspects of bamboo such as identification of suitable species, cultivation and propagation techniques, grading, treatment, structural use were discussed in detail.

Noted experts  Dr. P. Tetali, Scientist, Plant Research, Vinay Kolte from Bamboo Nursery, Bhor Pune, Sanjeev Karpe, Managing Director, Native Konbac Bamboo Products,  Avinash Kumar,  Director, of Bamboo Research & Training Centre, Chichpalli, Ms. Nirupama Deshpande, Founder of Sampoorna Bamboo Kendra, Melghat, M. Shrinivasa Reddy, Director of Chandrapur Forest Academy, Dr. Narendra Shah, Member Secretary, RGSTC, Ms. Pragati Gokhale, Advisor, RGSTC, Nagpur shared their in-depth research and industry experience during the technical sessions.

The programme was conducted by Ms. Priya Madig and vote of thanks was given by Mr. Ashis Gharai, Head of STRC.
