Gadchiroli Jan. 13 (District Correspondent) The life size statues of the great social reformers Savitribai Phule and Mahatma Jyotiba Phule were unveiled at village Dibhana near here the other day.
Mali Samaj Sangathana has installed these statues in the main square of the village which have become a matter of attraction in the area.
The statues were unveiled at the hands of Dr. Namdeo Kirsan, General Secretary of Maharashtra Pradesh Congress, Adv. Vishwajeet Kowase, General Secretary of Maharashtra Youth Congress, Arvind Katratwar, leader of Shiv Sena (Thakre).
Speaking on the occasion Adv. Kowase said that all religions should be equal and the principle of equality should be cultivated among the people. It is the need of the hour. Religion should not be used for politics and elections should not be held in the name of religion. Those who seek people’s mandate in the name of religion should be first asked about the basic things like employment and education, he added. Mahatma Phule and Savitribai Phule fought against the orthodox system throughout their lives and this fight needs to be continued, he stated.
Dr. Kirsan threw light on the great social reforms done by the Phule couple and remined that they devoted their life for the cause of oppressed people and brought a revolution. Education to women and backwards, fight against social evils like caste system will always be remembered and inspire the people, he said.
Also present on the occasion were Mr. Vilas Dashmukhe, Former Deputy Chairman of Panchayat Samiti, Ms. Abhilasha Gavture, social worker, Netaji Gavture, Vilas Jengthe, Ajay Mohurle, Keshav Jengthe were also present on the occasion as the guests of honour. A large number of people attended the programme.
