Gadchiroli Aug. 27 (District Correspondent) ‘There is a need of protecting the forest to maintain the environmental balance in the present age of global warming. Reduction of forest is already causing ill effects on the human life and workers devoted to this cause should be created’ observed noted social worker Padma Shree Dr. Prakash Amte.

He was speaking at a programme ‘Smarananjali’ organized to release the book ‘Swarajya Yatrik’ based on the life and work of the late social activist Mohan Hirabai Hiralal at Ganli Sabhagriha here on Tuesday. This book is a collection of articles written by several well-known writers and social activists.

Ms. Sumatitai Munghate, senior social worker, presided over the programme while Dr. Dewaji Tofa, noted social worker, Rohidas Raut, journalist, Dr. Kanna Madavi, Medical Superintendent of Aheri, Ms. Sawita Tare were prominently present.

Dr. Amte recalled the activism of late Mohan Bhai and said he devoted his life in the field of jal, jangal, jameen and created massive awareness among the people. It was because of his tireless efforts that a small village like Mendha Lekha in the district of Gadchiroli could shine on the world map. He got the law regarding community forest rights passed by the government and showed a novel experiment; he pointed out adding that his life will always inspire the people.

Dr. Tofa recalled the memories of doing social work together Mohan Bhai’s and how the model of Mendha Lekha was developed under his guidance that gave direction to the entire society. He studied the laws in detail and also the tribal culture. After continuous struggle of 20 years the experiment of Mendha Lekha’s community forest rights bore fruits and became the first of its kind in the country, he mentioned.

Mr. Rohidas Raut, Dr. Kanna Madavi, Ms. Savita Tare also spoke on the occasion and shared their experiences with the late Mohan Bhai describing him as the real social worker rooted in the society and working for the masses.

At the outset, Dr. Satish Gogulwar, head of Amhi Amchya Arogyasathi delivered an introductory speech and gave the details of the book. Ms. Shubhada Deshmukh introduced the guests, Ms. Savita Sadamwar conducted the programme and Keshao Gurnule of the Srushti Sanstha proposed the vote of thanks.

A large number of people including eminent citizens, gram sabha workers, social activists attended the programme.
