Gadchiroli Dec. 31 (District Correspondent) A wild elephant was killed due to electric current in a farm near village Wadhona in Kurkheda taluka early this morning. This is the first such incident in the district in which a wild elephant was killed due to electrocution. Quite a sensation has prevailed in the district following this incident.
According to reports, a herd of wild elephants was roaming in Wadhona -Bhagwanpur area for the past few days. As the jumbos were moving around, one of them, a female elephant, came into contact with a live electric wire that was laid in the farm in which the animal was killed. The farm where the electric wire was laid belongs to one Raghunath Krishna Narnawre, a resident of village Wadhona.
The forest officials came to know about the incident from the drone camera deployed in the area for the monitoring of the wild elephants. On getting the information, forest officials including Wadsa Dy. Conservator of forest Dharmaveer Salvitthal, Vigilance DFO G. N. Patole and others rushed to the spot and conducted the necessary enquiry. The Wildlife Warden Milind Umre and National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) representative Nilesh Patle also reached the spot and inspected the situation. A team of veterinary doctors from Rapid Rescue Team of Tadoba led by Dr. Ravikant Khobragade was called to examine the dead elephant and postmortem was performed upon the elephant.
It was found during the investigation that the elephant was killed due to electric current of a live wire laid in the farm. The jumbo will be buried in the forest near the farm in presence of the senior forest officials.
A large number of villagers also rushed to see the elephant and the police jawans were also deployed to maintain the law-and-order situation.
Yesterday itself a woman from village Shankarnagar in Armori taluka was thrashed to death by an elephant.
