Gadchiroli June 7 (District Correspondent) A grand free helmet distribution program was organized by Lloyd Metals and Energy Limited Company on the occasion of Safety Week at Veer Baburao Chowk in Alapalli the other day. Retired DGP S. S. Khandelwal presided over the program. Young cricketer Jitesh Sharma, actress Nakshatra Medhekar were the special guests. RTO Meshram, Atul Khadilkar, SDPO Sudarshan Rathod, Senate member Tanushree Atram were the chief guests. Atram, ex-PS member Harsh Vardhan Atram, Sarpanch Shankar Meshram, Dy. Sarpanch Vinod Akanpalliwar and other dignitaries were also present.
Speaking on the occasion Mr. Atram said bike riders often die due to non-use of helmets. Due to this, public awareness is also being created for helmet compulsion. However, helmets are still not used by citizens. The Motor Vehicle Act requires every person to wear a helmet while traveling on a two-wheeler. Helmets are therefore mandatory to avoid accidental deaths.
Mr. Atram further said he had made helmets compulsory in 2004 when he was the transport minister. However, some opposed it. Finally, people started to know how safe they are because of helmets. Also, if you have two-wheeler, four-wheeler then driving license is also required. It has many benefits. Lloyd Metals Company has distributed around 1 thousand helmets by carrying out special drive. I am proud of this and the company should conduct a camp and give licenses to the two-wheeler drivers through the RTO office, he advised.
