Gadchiroli June 2 (District Correspondent) While the citizens of Gadchiroli are facing severe drinking water problem, the municipal office bearers and councillors are enjoying the tour arranged on the eve of MLC elections.
For the last more than 10 days, the city of Gadchiroli has been facing water scarcity as ‘the main source of water supply in the Wainganga River has dried up. The council administration and the elected councillors were however in deep slumber all these days and they have woken up after the issue became very critical and earthen bandhara has been constructed in the river basin.
Had the authorities made these arrangements well in advance, the people would not have faced the crisis. Now the water from Gose Khurd project is going to be released in the river, but till that water actually reaches the river, the water supply cannot be resumed and the people will have to suffer.
Drinking water problem is still continuing as their taps are running dry with not a single drop of water for the last few days. Those who have their own arrangements like bore wells or wells are managing somehow but most of the wells also have dried up and the situation has become grim. Those who don’t have such arrangements have to wander for the water in the scorching heat blaming their own fate.
The whole situation has spread resentment among the citizens but the elected representatives are away from the city.
SHRIKANT DESHMUKH’S INITIATIVE–Meanwhile, a young Congress councillor from Ramnagar area Shrikant Deshmukh has been providing tankers to the needy residents to fetch their drinking water requirement. He has been doing this from his own expenses considering the emergency situation that has arisen in the city. He is also personally monitoring the supply of water by visiting the sites to ensure that the needy people get water. His efforts are being appreciated by the residents.
The whole situation has brought forward the lack of timely planning and careless attitude of the elected representatives and the administrative officials.
