Gadchiroli May 25 (District Correspondent) The wild elephants that have been creating menace in the district for the last three years after entering in this forest rich district from the Chhattisgarh, have now reached the district head quarters itself thereby causing a great deal of sensation and restlessness among the people of the city.
The two tuskers reached the city last midnight and moved through many areas winding through the Potegaon Road, Forest Office, Reddy Godown Square and the Bus Stand on Dhanora Road. After their journey into the city, the elephants then were driven away into the forest of Gogaon, on the outskirts of the city.
Some people who happened to witnessed this harrowing experience, captured the video of the elephants and circulated it on the social media which went viral like wildfire and there has been just one talk in the city- the entry of elephants.
No any untoward incident took place because all the people had gone to sleep but the entry of the elephants into the core of the city itself may have the sleepless nights ahead as there is no guarantee as to when again they will make their visit here.
Around a fortnight back, a herd of the elephants had entered the villages near Gadchiroli causing severe damage to the crops and injuring at least three women from village Krupala. After that the two tuskers had entered village Manapur in Armori taluka in the broad day light and moved into the village. A woman was injured at this time as the elephant pushed her by its tusker.
The number of elephants that have been roaming in the district has now raised to around 32 with some babies having born in the district itself. The two tuskers that are moving independently are reported to be separate ones.
When asked about the elephant’s entry Dy. CF of Gadchiroli division Milish Dutta Sharma told that regular monitoring of the tuskers was being done by the forest officials and as soon as they came to know about the entry teams of the forest department rushed to the spot and drove away the elephants in the forest of Gogaon-Churchura. To avert such incidents in the future, regular monitoring will be continued, Sharma added.
There has been a consistent demand from the elected public representatives and different political parties to take immediate measures to drive away the elephants but the forest department has not paid any serious attention towards it. Had the elephants entered the city in the day time, the situation might have been quite terrible. It was the entry of just two tuskers which have been moving separately, had the entire herd entered the city, what would have been the situation, the people here are asking.
