Gadchiroli Oct. 30 (District Correspondent) The paddy growing farmers in the district have suffered a heavy loss as their crops have badly damaged due to untimely rains that have lashed in the last two three days.

Many of the farmers had already harvested their paddy and kept in the fields preparing for the further process of tying bundles and assembling them but all the paddy has been lying in the fields and has gone under rainwater in the fields thereby causing a severe damage to the crop. The standing crops also have been badly damaged due to this rains.

The crops have thus been snatched away from their mouth in the final stage putting the farmers into heavy loss. The farmer’s community has thus been caught in a great distress and heavy financial losses due to this natural calamity.

As the paddy is caught under rain water it becomes useless for the milling purposes nor can it be sold in the market because it is badly damaged. The paddy crops were already suffering due to heavy rains of this monsoon. Whatever the yield the farmers got has also been now damaged due to rains.

This is the time for harvesting of the paddy crops but in the midst of this important time, the paddy is caught under the rain water and all the hard work of the farmers has now gone in waste.

Against this backdrop, Gadchiroli-Chimur Lok Sabha MP Dr. Namdev Kirsan has written a letter to the District Collector demanding immediate panchnama of the damaged areas and financial aid to the farmers. The unseasonal rains that have been falling for the past few days have caused huge losses to farmers; he has pointed out.

Dr. Kirsan has mentioned in his letter that the farmers cultivate paddy, cotton, soybean, tur, maize etc. during the Kharif season. At present, when these crops are about to be harvested, the unseasonal rains have destroyed the crops in many places. In some places, the harvesting work has come to a standstill due to waterlogging in the fields and all the labour and expenses of the farmers have been wasted, he also mentioned.

The crops have been snatched away due to this unseasonal rain. The farmers are in serious financial crisis. The administration should conduct a panchanama on war footing and provide immediate financial assistance to the affected farmers,” Dr. Kirsan demanded.

Dr. Kirsan has appealed to the government to take immediate measures in the wake of this natural disaster and announce special assistance to provide relief to the farmers.
