Gadchiroli March 3 (District Correspondent) Understanding the needs of local women and aiming to provide them with better facilities during their menstruation period, Lloyds Infinite Foundation has built a well-equipped Kurma Ghar in Surjagarh, a remote and underdeveloped region in Etapalli taluka of Gadchiroli district.
This initiative under the leadership of Mr. B Prabhakaran, Managing Director of Lloyds Metals and Energy Ltd. and Ms. Kirthy Krishna, Director, ensures that women observing the tradition have access to clean and safe facilities.
In many rural and tribal areas of Gadchiroli, the traditional practice of Kurma Ghar still prevails—a designated space where women and adolescent girls stay during their menstrual cycle. Rooted in age-old customs, Kurma Ghar is a separate structure within household premises, where women are provided with essentials like bedding and daily necessities during this period. While awareness about menstrual health is gradually increasing, this practice remains common in interior villages.
Along with the inauguration, an impactful Menstrual Hygiene Awareness Session was also conducted. Ms. Kalpana Alam, Former Sarpanch and ASHA Worker, Ms. Aruna Sadmek, Sarpanch of Pursalgondi, Ms. Nirmala Sadmek, Kurma Ghar President; Mr. Lalsay Talande, Surjagarh Bhumiya, Ms. Sunita Mehta, Project Director, LKAM Hospital and LRVN School graced the occasion.
Proper menstrual knowledge and hygiene practices play a crucial role in ensuring safer and healthier lives for women. Ms. Kavita Durgam educated women on menstrual hygiene practices.
Sarpanch Ms. Aruna Sadmek shared her insights on this important issue and pledged her strong support for the initiative. The event concluded with the official handover of the Kurma Ghar. Sanitary napkins were distributed on the occasion. The women assured their commitment to managing and running the Kurma Ghar effectively in the future.
The success of this event stands as a testament to the collective efforts of the community and Lloyds Infinite Foundation toward women’s well-being. This milestone also marks a significant step in breaking taboos, empowering women, and ensuring a healthier future for the community.
