Gadchiroli Sept. 4 (District Correspondent) Village Dhannur in Mulchera taluka of the district has become dispute free due to effective ban of liquor.

The villagers, who were unable to bear the serious problems caused by the illegal sale of liquor, held three consecutive meetings and took a resolution to ban the sale of illegal liquor. Not only this, by implementing strict decisions, the village was freed from disputes. Now this village has been free from illegal liquor sale for 25 consecutive years, according to information given by Muktipath Project of SEARCH.

Dhannur is a village with just 130 houses. Illegal sale of liquor started in this village 25 to 30 years ago. Due to this, there were daily fights in the village. The issue of prohibition of sale of liquor was discussed with the help of citizens, women and people of the village who were affected by this problem. After that it was decided to create a village free of illegal liquor sale by holding repeated meetings. Along with this, it was decided to solve the problems in the village by taking decisions in the village itself.

Thus, for the last 25 to 30 years, illegal sale of liquor has been banned in the village. Also, it was decided to hold a meeting in the village if a person drinks alcohol and has a quarrel with another person at home or in the village. If a decision is taken in the said meeting, a fine of 2,000 is collected from that person. If he commits the same mistake for the second time, he will be fined with Rs. 10,000. Even after that, if there is a drunken fight, no villager will go to the house of the concerned person.

The practice has been implemented for 10 years. Similarly, even when there was a ban on drinking alcohol during the Corona period, a fine of Rs. 1,000 was collected from 5 to 6 people who were drinking alcohol from another village. In this way, the villagers have come together to stop the illegal sale of liquor for the past 25 to 30 years and the village has now become dispute free.
