Gadchiroli Sept. 8 (District Correspondent) Stating that a tribal worker like him could become the minister only because of the Constitution of India, former Minister and senior Congress leader Prof. Vasant Purke has expressed the need of saving and safeguarding the constitution.

Prof. Purke was in the city in connection with the Jansanvad Padyatra and talked to the media persons at the Circuit House here on Thursday afternoon.

Explaining his point further he said that the constitution has given strength to every citizen and enabled them to achieve their progress. Any effort, therefore, to weaken or change this constitution must be thwarted and Congress party will make all out efforts to save it, he asserted.

It is very unfortunate that the riots and clashes have increased in the country in the name of religion and caste. Deliberate efforts are being made to widen the gap between different communities, he alleged adding that this needs to be stopped for the better living and development of the country, opined Mr. Purke.

Prof. Purke strongly criticised the Prime minister of India for keeping mum on the burning and serious issue like Manipur and demanded early resolution of the long pending problem in the larger interest of the people of Manipur and the country at large. The basic problems like unemployment, poverty, rising prices are needed to be urgently addressed instead of diverting the attention of the people in the non-issues, he demanded further.

The BJP government is anti-democracy. It has nothing to do with the comman people. Many decisions of this government are against the interest of the poor people, he alleged appealing the people to oust this government in the next elections.

The Jansanvad Padyatra has been taken out all over the state of Maharashtra to coincide the completion of one year of the Bharat Jodo yatra taken out by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and it has been evoking tremendous response from the general public, Purke claimed. Connecting the maximum people and removing the atmosphere of hatred is the objective of this yatra, he added.

Also present at the press conference were Mr. Marotrao kowase, former MP, Dr. Namdeo Usendi, former MLA, Dr. Namdeo kirsan, General Secretary of MPCC, Mahendra Bramhanwade, District Congress chief, Anandrao Gedam, ex MLA, Manohar Patil Poretti, former ZP Vice President, Dr. Nitin Kodwate, Ms. Kusum Alam, Satish Vidhate and others.
