Gadchiroli Sept. 10 (District Correspondent) Even as the report of the parents carrying the bodies of their two children on their shoulders for 15 kilometres to reach their home are fresh, an incident of one more pregnant woman crossing the nullah to reach the health centre for her delivery has come to light.

The name of the ill-fated woman is given as Babita Mattami, a resident of village Lanji in Etapalli taluka. Due to timely treatment, however, the delivery was done and both the mother and new born are reported to be safe.

According to reports, Babita started her labour pains this morning. When the ASHA worker of the village Vanita Pungati came to know about this, she immediately intimated it to the Medical Officer of Todsa. He arranged the vehicle and started for the village to bring the patient.

However, a nullah near the village was flowing as there has been rainfall for the last two days and the vehicle could not reach upto the village. The Medical Officer Dr. Rakesh Nagose, Community Health Officer Saloni Dange, Health Worker Budhabai Lekami, Dattu Madavi, Vaishali Weladi and ASHA Worker Vanita Pungati with the help of the other health workers and villagers somehow took the pregnant woman across the nullah and took her to the health centre. The pregnant woman had to walk through the water of nullah to reach the other side of nullah risking her life.

The woman was then taken to the Todsa health centre after travelling 5 kilometres distance and she delivered a girl baby at around 3 pm. Both the mother and the baby is safe now.

It should be mentioned here that on July 18 last, a pregnant woman from village Kukdeli in Bhamragad taluka had to be taken to the health centre in a JCB machine as the nullah on the way was flowing and it had become difficult to cross it.

Many such incidents have been taking place in remote areas of the district during rainy season and the people have been suffering a lot.
