Gadchiroli Aug. 29 (District Correspondent) The bodies of an old couple of Karpanfundi village under the Yemli Burgi police centre limits of Etapalli taluka were finally found after rigorous search.
The twosome were killed and their bodies thrown into the Bande river. On Aug. 27, the body of the wife was found in Bande river with ropes and stones tied on her legs. The next day her husband’s body was also found in the river bed, some 8 kilometres away from the body of the wife. The deceased couple have been identified as Burgu Rainu Gota (65 years) and Rainu Jangli Gota (70 years). To unravel this mysterious incident, the Superintendent of Police has formed five teams and four suspects have been detained so far.
The Gota couple has been missing since Saturday. After a search by the relatives, the dead body of Burgu (wife) was found in the riverbed on the morning of 27 th. But Rainu was not still found. Police launched a search operation after relatives expressed suspicion that the couple had been murdered. A man’s body was found in the same riverbed. It is being ensured that he is Rainu’s (husband). A crime has been registered at Aldandi Police Station.
According to information, Rainu and Burgu, who work as priests, have 6 sons and 2 daughters. The motive behind the murder was not known. But to unravel it, 5 teams have been formed under the guidance of Superintendent of Police Nilotpal. The said incident is being thoroughly investigated and 4 suspects have been detained. It will soon become clear whether the couple was killed on suspicion of witchcraft or a dispute over property.
A few months ago, two people, including a woman, were burnt alive by villagers in Barsewada village of Etapalli taluk on suspicion of witchcraft. Also, an old man from Jambia (Gatta) was beaten with a hot rod. On the background of these incidents, the doubt is being expressed that the murders of the old couple also might have been committed over the same suspicion. However, the police estimate that the reason behind this incident may be different.
