Gadchiroli Sept. 4 (District Correspondent) The elections to the senate of the Gondwana University were held today in a peaceful manner. There was estimated 47 percent voting in graduates category, 95 percent in Principals category and 79 percent in the College teachers category elections.
There were total 54 polling booths- 18 in Gadchiroli district and 36 in Chandrapur district. As many as 88 candidates were in the fray for 33 posts of senate members from different categories-Principal, Teachers and Graduates. The University had a total of 25,598 voters.
The voting took place between 7 am and 5 pm. In urban areas and 7 to 3 pm in naxal affected areas. The city of Gadchiroli had 2 polling booths one at the govt. Science college and another at Shivaji Mahavidyalaya. The major panels contesting the elections had raised their pandals near the booths where the information about voting was given by the workers.
No much rush was seen on the booths in the morning hours. However, voters started turning up from 10 am onwards. The candidates were seen visiting the booths and supervising the election process.
Prominent leaders including MP Ashok Nete, MLA Dr. Deorao Holi also visited the pandals and took review of the election. The main contest was seen among the three panels one led by ABVP, another led by Vidarbha Madhyamik Shikshak Sangha and third Secular Parivartan Panel.
The names of many graduates were not seen in the voters list hence they had to return without voting disappointed. Many of the graduates complained that they had already submitted the enrolment forms but their names did not appear in the voters list.
No much strict arrangements were seen near the polling booths. The panels had displayed their banners in the pandals which was not officially permitted. However, the University administration did not take any action on this despite complaints by some citizens and the banners continued in the pandals for the whole day.
The elections were however held in a peaceful manner.
