Gadchiroli Nov. 15 (District Correspondent) In response to the public and the campaign being taken up by Muktipath, a total of 27 candidates from across the district have promised that they will not distribute alcohol or drink it during the ongoing general elections to state assembly.
A total of 309 villages have so far passed a resolution that they will not vote for a leader who does not promise that he will not distributes liquor. Responding well to the people’s decision, 27 of the total 29 candidates in the three assembly constituencies have given their pledge.
I and my party will not use alcohol to get votes in elections. I support liquor ban in Gadchiroli district. If elected in this election or not, I will do my best for the effective implementation of liquor ban in the district, they have promised in writing and recorded manner.
Liquor is banned in the district. Assembly elections are going to be held in all the three assembly constituencies of the district-namely Gadchiroli, Armori and Aheri and the voting process will be held on November 20. In order not to use alcohol to get votes, the women have decided that ‘Jo pajil mazya nawryala daru, tyala nakkich padu’ (whoever gives liquor to my husband, we will not vote him). Hundreds of the villagers also have passed resolutions that we will not vote for those who pollute the environment of the village by distributing alcohol and try to violate the code of conduct.
People want peace and order in the village, efforts are being made to prevent alcohol. The men and women of the village have made their village alcohol free by teaching a lesson to the illegal liquor sellers.
However, during the election period, there is a fear of distribution of liquor by the candidates to divert the vote, due to which Muktipath team and district administration has called for voting awareness and alcohol-free election. Public awareness has been created using various methods such as big banners in the city, posters at main places in the wards, door to door information leaflets, audio clips of ward meetings, short videos etc.
